Key SOLIDWORKS Enhancements Announced at 3DEXPERIENCE World 2026

If you’ve been following the announcements from 3DEXPERIENCE World 2026, you already know that this year brought some big changes for SOLIDWORKS users. In my previous article, “Next Releases of SOLIDWORKS 2026: What Engineers Need to Know,” I spoke about the bigger picture — how AI, tools like Aura and Leo, and smarter workflows are shaping the future of design.

If you haven’t read it yet, I recommend starting there to understand the overall direction SOLIDWORKS is heading.

In this article, I want to go a step further and focus on the practical enhancements announced at the event. These are the updates that directly impact how we work every day — drawings, assemblies, performance, collaboration and design efficiency.

Let’s break them down in a simple and practical way.

Smarter Configuration and BOM Management

Working with multiple configurations is now much easier. When you change the reference configuration in an assembly drawing view, the Bill of Materials updates automatically to match it.

This means:

  • No more manual BOM edits.
  • Fewer mistakes.
  • Faster updates when designs change.

If you deal with many configurations, this improvement alone can save hours.

Better Support for Graphic Bodies

SOLIDWORKS has supported graphic bodies for a while, especially for imported or scanned models. Now, you can display graphic bodies directly in drawing views without converting them to solid or surface bodies.

This:

  • Reduces preparation time.
  • Simplifies detailing.
  • Makes working with imported data much smoother.

Automatic Control Over Latest Revisions

Managing the correct version of files is critical. A new server option allows SOLIDWORKS to automatically download the latest revision of first-level references when opening files.

Users can control this behavior from their session settings. Instead of manually replacing outdated references, updates happen automatically and can be saved back to the 3DEXPERIENCE platform with confidence.

Pattern Assistant for Faster Assemblies

Pattern-driven components are faster and more stable than manual mating. Now, SOLIDWORKS helps you use them correctly.

When you create a second instance of a component that matches a pattern feature, the Pattern Assistant automatically suggests creating a pattern instead of mates.

The command launches with key options already filled in, improving:

  • Rebuild speed.
  • Performance.
  • Automatic updates.

Clearer and More Powerful Sketch Relations

Sketching gets a big usability boost with relation groups.

You can now:

  • Add relations to multiple entities at once.
  • See which relations belong together using numbered icons.
  • Highlight all related entities by hovering over one icon.

When deleting a relation, you can remove just one without breaking the overall design intent. This makes sketches easier to manage and understand.

PLM-Linked BOM Columns in Drawings

BOM columns in drawings can now be linked directly to PLM attributes.

Once connected:

  • Both default and custom PLM attributes appear in the column list.
  • BOM data updates automatically when connected to the platform.
  • These columns can be saved in BOM templates.

This brings drawings closer to real product data.

Clearer Threaded Hole Callouts

Threaded hole callouts can now show the full description directly in drawings.

The result is:

  • Cleaner drawings.
  • Faster understanding on the shop floor.
  • Fewer manufacturing questions.

This is a small change with big clarity benefits.

Everyday Drawing Enhancements

Several drawing improvements focus on readability and speed:

  • DimXpert dimensions can be quickly marked for drawing use.
  • Notes can be highlighted with color to make key callouts stand out.
  • Slot dimensions can now be defined from arc center to arc center.
  • Favorite symbol categories let you pin commonly used symbols.

These updates reduce workarounds and improve consistency.

Freeze and Save: Protect Your Designs

A new Freeze and Save feature helps prevent unwanted changes after a design is finalized.

When a file is frozen:

  • Rebuilds and configuration updates can’t modify it.
  • Performance improves.
  • The feature tree clearly shows protected items.

You can unfreeze the model if changes are needed, then freeze it again. This adds PLM-style control directly inside SOLIDWORKS.

Automatic Repair of Lost References

If a feature loses its reference (like a deleted sketch plane), SOLIDWORKS will soon suggest the best replacement automatically.

With auto-repair:

  • Nearby planes and faces are analyzed.
  • References are restored without manual searching.

This saves time and avoids rebuild errors.

Instant Design Guidance for Strength

You’ll soon be able to view section modules directly inside SOLIDWORKS, giving quick insight into how well a beam resists bending — without setting up a full simulation.

This helps engineers make better early design decisions.

Faster Patterns and Assembly Performance Insights

Patterns with many cuts now rebuild much faster.

In assemblies, new performance guidance icons on the status bar highlight:

  • Circular references.
  • Mate issues.
  • Heavy geometry.

SOLIDWORKS not only flags problems but explains why performance is affected and how to fix it.

Improved Display States and Isolation

Isolation tools get a major upgrade. You can now:

  • Isolate within an isolate (multiple levels deep).
  • Save each isolated view as a display state.
  • Reuse them for reviews or drawing views.

This makes large assemblies easier to explore and present.

Smarter Handling of Hardware and Threads

When inserting downloaded fasteners:

  • SOLIDWORKS automatically detects hardware.
  • Recognizes detailed threads.
  • Suggests simplification for better performance.

This keeps assemblies lightweight without losing design intent.

Faster, Built-In Collaboration

Collaboration inside SOLIDWORKS becomes smoother with:

  • A new Comment Manager button.
  • Viewing and replying to markups without opening a browser.
  • Creating tasks directly from comments.
  • Inviting external collaborators.

Soon, users will also create 3D markups directly inside SOLIDWORKS, keeping everything in one place.

Background Drawing Updates

One of the most productivity-boosting changes: drawings can update in the background.

When parts change:

  • Affected drawings are identified.
  • They rebuild and save automatically.
  • You can keep working without waiting.

No more staring at progress bars.

Design Assistant for Sheet Metal

The Design Assistant uses machine learning to suggest:

  • Weld bead locations.
  • Tab and slot features.

With one click, it:

  • Identifies valid locations.
  • Creates geometry automatically.
  • Lets you fine-tune sizes and spacing.

This removes repetitive modeling work from sheet metal design.

More Realistic Simulation with Gradual Bolt Preload

In SOLIDWORKS Simulation, bolt preload can now be applied gradually instead of all at once.

This allows engineers to:

  • Observe deformation step by step.
  • Better understand sealing behavior.
  • Validate designs more realistically.

Perfect for clamps, flanges and pressure-sensitive assemblies.

Final Thoughts

The SOLIDWORKS enhancements announced at 3DEXPERIENCE World 2026 are not about flashy features — they’re about real productivity gains. Faster rebuilds, clearer drawings, smarter automation and stronger collaboration all point to one thing: less time fixing problems and more time designing.

If you use SOLIDWORKS daily, these updates will make your workflow noticeably smoother.
